Monthly Buddhist Service
The 24th of each month• 1:30 pm
Enjoy a simple Buddhist service in which prayers are preformed and blessings bestowed upon visitors.
Third Sunday of January • 1:00 pm
See how locals offer their wishes and hopes for the New Year. After a short service in the main hall, the holy fire is lit in a highly retailed ritual called gomataki. Prayers written on wooden tablets that are tossed into the sacred flames.
First Sunday of April• 1:00 pm
Celebrate the birth of the Buddha and the arrival of Spring with this unique gathering that combines Buddhist tradition and contemporary music. A rare chance to enjoy a concert inside a Buddhist temple hall.
Second Sunday of November• 1:00 pm
Witness the arrival of masked tengu - mythical forest creatures - as ancient traditions are carried into the modern day. This is one of Kyoto’s most mysterious and interesting events.
New Year Bell Ringing

Ring in the new year with the Japanese tradition of bell ringing and well-wishing.
